The No. 7 women’s hockey Buckeyes kept rolling on Saturday afternoon. They notched another 3-2 win over and a series sweep of Quinnipiac. Like last night’s tilt, this one began with a scoreless first period. But, just like last night, Ohio State cranked the intensity up in the second.

Quinnipiac | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
The Bucks put 16 shots on net in the middle frame and beat Bobcat goalie Allison Small twice. Olivia Soares kicked off the scoring with her first goal of the year. It just took a little while for everyone to realize it. Soares not only fooled the Quinnipiac goalie with the shot, she fooled the referees. The play was not initially called a goal but when officials reviewed the tape later they corrected the mistake. Freshman Paetyn Levis assisted on the tally to notch her first collegiate point.

Resident Buckeye top gun Tatum Skaggs handled the rest of the scoring for the Scarlet and Gray. She potted the team’s second goal late in the second period and added another early in the third. Linemate Emma Maltais picked up helpers on both markers for a total of four points this series. Freshman defender Eve Savander collected an assist on one of Skaggs’ lamplighters and her first point as a Buckeye.

Skaggs’ second tally was the game winning and series sweep-clinching score. Once again three goals were just enough to defeat the Bobcats. Melissa Samoskevich struck twice in the contest. She first lifted the puck over Buckeye goalie Amanda Zeglen’s glove on a breakaway and then banked one in off the back of the goalie from behind the net. But despite the Quinnipiac captain’s notable effort, the Bucks held on for another win and an opening weekend sweep.
Seventh-ranked Ohio State (2-0-0) now returns to Columbus for its home opener next week. The Buckeyes face a titanic clash with No. 5 Colgate.
