Ohio State women’s basketball ended its regular season with a tough loss but will still be the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

After earning a 74-66 win over Maryland in their first meeting of the season, Ohio State came up just short in College Park on Sunday, falling 93-90 in overtime to the 19th-ranked Terrapins in its final game of the regular season.

Ohio State, which finishes the regular season with a 24-5 record, battled back from a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to send the game to overtime but came up just short in the end as Maryland’s Sarah Te-Biasu made a game-winning 3-pointer with one second left to play in overtime.

The Terrapins led for the entire first quarter after Allie Kubek scored on the game’s opening possession. Taylor Thierry scored eight first-quarter points for Ohio State on a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of free throws, but Maryland’s Shyanne Sellers – the daughter of former Ohio State men’s basketball star Brad Sellers – answered with eight first-quarter points on two threes and two free throws of her own.

Ohio State took its first lead of the game with 3:33 to play in the second quarter, going ahead 33-32 on an Elsa Lemmilä layup. Ohio State scored 19 of the first 27 points of the quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a four-point advantage. Sellers finished the second-quarter scoring with her fourth three of the first half to make it a one-point game at halftime.

Sellers – who missed Maryland’s first game against Ohio State with a knee injury – had to be helped off the court after going down awkwardly on a layup attempt early in the third quarter, but she was able to return to the game a few minutes later.

Maryland led for nearly all of the third quarter – partially because Ohio State’s star point guard, Jaloni Cambridge, sat most of the quarter after picking up her fourth personal foul – but Ohio State kept the deficit within four for the entire quarter.

After Chance Gray cut Maryland’s lead to one by scoring the final points of the third quarter on a 3-pointer, Cambridge scored the first points of the fourth quarter on a layup to put Ohio State back in front. Maryland scored the next five points, however, to move back ahead by four.

Cambridge picked up her fifth foul of the game on an offensive foul to foul out of the game with 7:26 to play, and Kaylene Smikle followed that with her second straight make to give Maryland a 67-61 lead. A three by Smikle on Maryland’s next possession gave Maryland a nine-point advantage for its largest lead of the game.

But just as it looked like Maryland had seized control of the game, Ohio State went on a 6-0 run as Thierry, Ajae Petty and Kennedy Cambridge all made layups. A Smikle layup pushed Maryland’s back to five, but a three by Madison Greene and a Thierry layup tied the game back up at 72-all with 2:58 to play.

Kennedy Cambridge had to be carried off the floor after suffering an apparent knee injury on Thierry’s layup, but was able to return to the game by the end of regulation, which proved crucial on the fourth quarter’s final possession.

Both teams scored two points on each of their next three possessions to make it a 78-78 game with 29 seconds to play. That gave Maryland the ball with a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but Kennedy Cambridge stole the ball away from Sellers to send the game to overtime.

Greene and Thierry combined to score the first five points of overtime for Ohio State. Te-Biasu and Sellers responded with back-to-back scores to make it a one-point game. Cotie McMahon scored on each of Ohio State’s next two possessions, with Smikle making a layup in between, to keep Ohio State in front. But a three by Smikle on Maryland’s subsequent possession tied the game back up at 87-all with 1:25 to play.

After both teams went scoreless on their next possessions, McMahon went 1-of-2 on a trip to the free-throw line to make it a one-point game with 33 seconds to play. A successful drive to the basket by Te-Biasu with 26 seconds to play gave Maryland its first lead of overtime. Ohio State appeared to retake the lead when Kennedy Cambridge put the ball through the basket on its next possession, but the play was whistled dead before the shot due to a questionable call of a held ball, which gave possession back to Maryland due to the possession arrow.

Following a 1-for-2 trip to the free throw line for Kubek, Ohio State tied the game on a Greene layup with seven seconds to play, but Te-Biasu’s game-winner prevented the game from going to a second overtime.

Smikle led Maryland to victory with 26 points while Sellers scored 21, Kubek scored 17 and Te-Biasu finished with 15. Thierry led Ohio State with 21 points in defeat with McMahon scoring 18.

Ohio State and Maryland finished the regular season tied for third in the Big Ten standings with identical 13-5 records in conference play because of Sunday’s result. The Buckeyes will be the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament over the No. 4 seed Terrapins, however, thanks to Ohio State’s win and Maryland’s loss to Illinois, giving OSU a better record than Maryland over the teams who tied for fifth place in the conference standings.

As the No. 3 seed, Ohio State receives a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament and will play in the quarterfinals at approximately 9 p.m. Friday. The game will be televised by Big Ten Network. Ohio State will face the winner of Thursday’s second-round game between No. 6 seed Michigan State and the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between No. 11 seed Wisconsin and No. 14 seed Iowa.
