Skull Session: 49ers No Longer Interested in Justin Fields, Chris Holtmann Was One of the Best Hires, and Don't Sleep on Pete Werner

Justin Fields is looking up in today's skull session.

I hope you meet this Monday with the same level of enthusiasm this guy showed for Mark Titus checking into the game.

Word of the Day: Reify.

OUT OF FIELDS? Well, it seems the 49ers really are about to spend three first-round picks on Mac Jones or Trey Lance.

I don't even know what to say to that, to be honest. Best of luck? I hope this works out for you and doesn't set your franchise back for years?

Basically, my entire stance on this matter can be summed up in this one Tweet:

But hey, if you want to be the latest team to draft a lad with the mobility of a petrified tree in hopes against all hope that he'll be the next Tom Brady while everyone else is looking for the next Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes, be my guest!

DON'T SLEEP ON PETE. Thursday night could be uncharacteristically quiet around Buckeye land with pretty much just Justin Fields really expecting to hear his name be called in the first round.

But just because Pete Werner isn't projected as a first-rounder doesn't mean he doesn't have first-round talent.

Pete Werner is absolutely going to have a quietly great NFL career where he makes no headlines but is a 10-year starter, casually makes a couple of Pro Bowls and leads his team in tackles every season.

BEST POSSIBLE HIRE. Remember that panic back in 2017 when Ohio State had to hire a coach in the middle of the summer, well past the traditional coaching carousel period, and some folks thought the Buckeyes missed out on the best options (Archie Miller)?

Turns out, Ohio State ended up with the best possible hire from that 2017 season.

The closest candidate to A-level, Holtmann has to get dinged due to losing to No. 15 seed Oral Roberts in this year's NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes are 87-43 (.669) in four seasons under Holtmann, who has a quality 46-32 record in the Big Ten (highest finish: second, in his first season). He's had an NCAA Tournament-level team every season since he arrived; he's the only coach on this list of which that's true, which is why he's ranked highest. Holtmann hasn't led the Buckeyes on a Sweet 16 run yet, though, and hasn't won a Big Ten title. He's the right man for the job, but there's still room to grow. GRADE: B-plus.

Meanwhile, Archie is down there at No. 11 out of 16, getting himself a grade of a C, which feels extremely generous for a guy who never made a tournament and got canned after three seasons.

I don't know if Holtmann's ever going to take the Buckeyes to the promised land, but I do know that he's better than the dude I publically wanted them to hire.

ANOTHER QUINCY AVERY DISCIPLE. Kyle McCord speaking to the upcoming quarterbacks class at Elite 11 is pretty cool, but what caught my attention is who's standing alongside him at Elite 11.

I'd forgotten that McCord was a Quincy Avery guy, too. So that makes Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord, which is a pretty solid crew.

It's getting to the point where it's hard to believe the Ohio State/Quincy Avery connection is purely coincidental. But based on the results, I have no qualms at all, either way.

“RESPECT IT OR NOT.” I cannot fault Dasan McCullough one bit for wanting to play college football alongside his two brothers on the team coached by his father, and my guy earned some big points for his incredible decommitment Tweet.

In a world of "respect my decision," Dasan went with "Respect it or not. I do not care."

Respect.
