During a unique time, Ohio State's commencement ceremony will be equally unique.
In light of the social distancing measures and restrictions on large gatherings, the university will hold a massive virtual commencement ceremony, featuring Apple CEO Tim Cook as the speaker.
The live-stream will take place at noon on Sunday, May 3 – the ceremony's originally scheduled time – where approximately 12,000 diplomas are expected to be awarded with graduates receiving their degrees by mail.
“We are so proud of everything you have accomplished -- and how you have stepped up and remained strong during this time of uncertainty,” Ohio State president Michael Drake said in a video announcing the event. “Just as you were headed into the homestretch and looking forward to walking across the field in Ohio Stadium on May 3, the world changed for you and for all of us. But you adapted and persevered.”
The broadcast will include Drake and university officials in traditional commencement regalia at Ohio Stadium, musical performances, special guests, and the commencement address.
“While we will not be able to link arms in Ohio Stadium right now, we will recognize your achievements virtually with your families and friends as we confer your degrees," Drake said.
Despite the digital ceremony, the university does still plans to hold a physical recognition event at a later date, with members of the 2020 graduating class expected to have an active role in scheduling and planning that event.
